Nintendo 64 End Labels!
Nintendo 64 End Label Project
Video by SeeJayAre
Written by Nate
As most loose cartridge retro game collectors know, the Nintendo 64 (N64) has always been the disgraceful child tucked away because of their inability to look good on a shelf. Their lack of end labels have left us aimlessly searching to find a particular game to the point of frustration! But just like an informercial to solve all your issues, SeeJayAre's latest video has the solution! Video game end labels...

You want to make a killer game?
All you video game fans, tell us if this is a receipt for success for a killer video game?
-Hideo Kojima (Metal Gear Creator)
-That dude chicks love from The Walking Dead (Daryl/Norman Reedus)
-Monster Guru Director Guillermo del Toro
Take all these ingredients and mix them into the game that is Silent Hill and you should have a crazy game that will make your senses bleed, given Hideo Kojima keeps his complicated long windedness to a minimum...

It's amazing, even at this point of retro video game archiving, there's still a game out there that's THIS GOOD... and I've NEVER PLAYED IT BEFORE! Journey to Silius falls into that that category of Hidden Gems - a fantastic game that you may have missed or never played back in the day. An interesting story in itself, as a retro gamer, you owe it to yourself to play this game! Even the Terminator himself couldn't stop this game, literally....

The Future of Retro Gaming - The Repros
Video by Canadian Zangief
If you consider retro video game collecting is evolving from it's infancy to adolescence, there are many future trends developing and it is our goal to document these trends as they unfold, news you can use!
The argument is out, are reproductions a true extension of this retro gaming culture or no more than glorified bootleggers? Reproductions can allow the retro game fan to play rare and expensive video games in their original format and even allow for a whole market of new, home made games (homebrews) for retro consoles. But why are some people against something that is seems so great? How can this be a danger to high priced collectors? Reproduction games are present in today's retro gaming culture, make sure you are prepared! *Nate plays evil music (A Special Video Request from Canadian Zangief)

What is a Fami-Clone?
Before being released in North America, the Nintendo's predecessor in Japan was known as Family Computer or Famicom. Throughout the mid to late 90's in Canada (and we're sure the USA as well) there were a run of these knock off Famicom consoles. You may have seen them growing up at Dollar-Stores advertised as "200 in 1's" or something similar. Today, we in the retro video game community refer to them as "Fami-Clones". They're cheap looking but fun to get when you find them and they're a part of our history. Our friend Andrew reviews a few of these Fami-clones from his collection!

The 5 Greatest Protectors in Video Game History
Written by Nate
When my baby (recently) first entered this world, I remember being overcome with the need to ensure the protection of this precious life. Much like great protectors of video games past, I would ensure very ounce of my energy bar went to ensure the survival of my baby. Let us honor that group of digital bodyguards who have ensured the protection of their vulnerable counterparts in "The Top 5 Greatest Protectors in Video Game History!

GAME OF THE WEEK - Super Dodge Ball
SUPER DODGE BALL
By Nate
"Like the NES version... on roids!"
Technos's Super Dodge Ball was originally released in 1987 via arcade, but it's the Nintendo (NES) version that most of us probably played growing up. One of the few good head-to-head NES games, Super Dodge Ball pitted the best dodge ball teams from around the world to "smash" it out on the way to the world championships. This 1996 NeoGeo version plays just like the original... except on roids!

Shovel Knight - A Review by 24BitGamer
24 Bit Review - Shovel knight
Adapted for website from Facebook by Nate
As of late its not that uncommon
of a practice for game company's especially indie ones to do a throwback to
retro games and new game developer Yacht Club is no exception. Shovel Knight
was a Kickstarter that was asking only $75,000.00 to get going and was far
surpassed by people reaching almost $300,000.00. Needless to say there was a
high expectation for this game. I am happy to say that Yacht Club delivered!

Assassin's Fist - Street Fighter Fans Rejoice!
By Nate Originally posted on RetroNate.blogspot.com
Can it be true? A live action Street Fighter that doesn't suck? Street Fighter Assassin's Fist ventures to go where no Street Fighter movie has gone before. From the ashes of "The Legend of Chun Li" and "Street Fighter" Starring Jean Claude Van Damme, can a Kick Starter concept do what it's multimillion dollar counterparts could not - make a Street Fighter movie that doesn't suck?

Retro Gaming Bloggers Unite - Boys Night Out
Written by Nate
Since the days pioneers like Angry Video Game Nerd and Pat the NES Punk began video blogging about retro video games on YouTube, it has grown to an informal community of like minded fans, like some digital shanty town. This has led to a few channels actually meeting up in person and partying like it's 1999!
A Crossover of epic proportions - 64BitMatthew and Thriftdweller live cities apart, but that wouldn't stop this undeniable attraction of two YouTube channels coming together in a multi video series series called "BOYS NIGHT OUT!"

My Name is Nate
Name: Nate AKA: Thriftdweller Nate, Retro Nate |
They say happiness is being paid to do what you love. Nate is my online persona for doing that which I love, retro video games and culture. It's just I'm not being paid to do so.
I began video blogging in 2012 on YouTube with my best friend Lester under the banner of Thriftdweller. Our online following has grown to over 2500 subscribers with more via Facebook and Google+. Locally, I have officially initiated Retro Games Winnipeg, the city's first retro video game fan group. With their help I was able to host Retro Gamers Unite, our city's first video game convention which was a great success. Since I have been featured on local radio and television.
Retro Canada X is my current project in an effort to branch into more written blogging and website / community management for the retro video game community in Canada. I have reached out to some of my favourite video bloggers, article writers and reviewers in an effort to grow this community and allow others to try their hand at blogging in either written, podcast or video form.
Click here to see a list of our blog's other video and article contributors.
