It's amazing, even at this point of retro video game archiving, there's still a game out there that's THIS GOOD... and I've NEVER PLAYED IT BEFORE! Journey to Silius falls into that that category of Hidden Gems - a fantastic game that you may have missed or never played back in the day. An interesting story in itself, as a retro gamer, you owe it to yourself to play this game! Even the Terminator himself couldn't stop this game, literally....

It was a cold winter trip to the local Flea Market one Saturday morning. One of my regular vendors had his demo tv on with a Nintendo game I've never seen before. I picked up the controller it was like digital orgasam! It's always exciting to discover a hidden gem! Journey to Silius may not be a staple game in anyone's "best games i've played as a kid" list, but it's pretty dam good and shouldn't be over looked! If you love classic run-n'-gun game play PLAY THIS GAME!
After minutes of gameplay, I was hooked. I even waited for the flea market vendor to turn his back so I could actually reset the game and check out the opening sequence to fully appreciate this game. Reminiscent Ninja Gaiden, it was actually a graphically beautiful sequence explaining you, playing the futuristic Jay McCRay (haha, Mc-Ray), are avenging the death of his father by some terrorist group. I love when a game actually goes deeper than just gameplay, regardless of how cliche it is.
The first thing you notice is how great the game play graphics are (Yes, I mean in NES terms) yet oddly familiar (we'll explain this later).
The graphics help to identify this as a game as it's own, which is important, as the run and gun gameplay reminds us of Contra and Mega Man mixed into one! It's pretty smooth overall but the jumping required some getting used to, a little stiff, like how Castelvania was. The boss battles are against large, well designed sprites that seem to run frustrating patterns you must learn to defeat them. *Nate sighs - Nintendo games are a love and hate relationships. There are some tricks you can learn to defeat the bosses, but learn them for yourself! This isn't a run through darn it! =D
When I read up on Journey to Silius I stumbled across a fun tid-bit of history! Remember how I said the graphics are "oddly familiar"? Well the story goes, before the game was released in 1990, Sunsoft lost the license to release this game under it's intended title "The Terminator" based on the 1984 movie of the same name. Sunsoft had to redesign some sprites and re-jig the story to remove all reference from the movie, but it's fun to play the game and see all the references, blatant and not so obvious, to the movie!
Lastly, the Soundtrack is considered legendary and I must agree! Excellent soundtrack just goes to enhance the overall experience. Love the music!
Overall: fun gameplay, a mix of many favourite classic NES games in one! Great music, graphics and fun to see all the references to it's original intended release "The Terminator" PLAY THIS GAME!

Sunsoft had to do some re-designing , but The final boss is pretty much the Terminator himself! |
