Shovel Knight - A Review by 24BitGamer

24 Bit Review - Shovel knight
Adapted for website from Facebook by Nate

As of late its not that uncommon of a practice for game company's especially indie ones to do a throwback to retro games and new game developer Yacht Club is no exception. Shovel Knight was a Kickstarter that was asking only $75,000.00 to get going and was far surpassed by people reaching almost $300,000.00. Needless to say there was a high expectation for this game. I am happy to say that Yacht Club delivered!

"Yacht Club delivered!"

Shovel Knight Plays like a highbred of Ducktails, Adventures of Link, Faxanadu, Mario 3, sprinkle in some dark souls for good measure. the story goes, the world was protected by many knights, and the two best nights were the shovel knight and the shield knight. one day while adventuring for treasure they happened upon the Tower of Fate, the two fell into the power of the cursed amulet, When Shovel Knight reawakens, the Tower has been sealed, Shield Knight nowhere to be seen. In Grievance the shovel night decides to give up adventuring, during his absence, the Enchantress rises to power, spreading evil across the land and unsealing the tower of fate. Hearing this the shovel knight once again picks up his shovel in a attempt to find out where or what happened to the shield knight! But he must go through the Order of No Quarter," who have been dispatched by the Enchantress to impede him.

The over world to this game is set up much like Mario 3, and works well for this game. There are towns you can go to and purchase health and magic upgrades, get information and find many secrets. there are many items you can acquire via the merchants and hidden areas in the levels. the controls are extremely tight. With your shovel you can hold down on the D-pad or joystick (your choice) and can bounce off enemies heads like in Ducktails (you can't continuously bounce) and you can shovel, like a real shovel to harm enemies and reveal treasure (you are going to want to get as much as you can to buy items and upgrades). You can get up to 4 bottles and refill them with magic or health much like Zelda, and you will need this! The best part of this game is the bosses, its nice to see a retro throwback not do carbon copies of their bosses. Each one feels more like its own entity. With there own patterns and attacks your going to have to figure out before beating them.

In conclusion this game is a must have if you own a Wii U or a 3Ds.It has great gameplay, Tight controls, insanely good music(composed by Jake Kaufman, Mega Man and Castlevania) all around good story, and a new game plus for you to do it allover again

9/10
