GAME OF THE WEEK Metal Slug First Mission

METAL GEAR FIRST MISSION

The rational for this week's choice could be attributed to it's platform as much as the game itself. Metal Slug First Mission was released on the short lived Neo Geo Pocket in 1999. Metal Slug itself is a fun version of this classic shoot-em-up platformer series. Just as good as Contra....

However I think Contra has the edge in nostalgia. If you loved Contra, play all the Metal Slug games, you shouldn't be disappointed. Focusing mainly on this "First Mission" version, it has toned down graphics for the Neo Geo Pocket (which I didn't find too bad). Personally, the Neo Geo Hardware doesn't allow a full appreciation for the Metal Slug series. I bet back in 1999 however, it was just cool to play Metal Slug on the go. First Mission has basic shoot em up gameplay that's easy to pickup. The chip tune music can get annoying after a while. Along with the graphics and game play that was shrunk down for First Mission, a little of the charm and fun was also reduced in size.
The Graphics are pretty great for handheld.

I did mention the Neo Geo pocket was part of the reason this game was chosen as GOW. Personally, it was sad that this hand held didn't stand a chance against the powerhouse of the Game Boy Pocket/ Game Boy Advance in early 2000. Neo Geo Pocket has a great library of games I encourage people to try out. A lot of the fighting games such as SNK vs. Capcom are some of the best hand held fighting games I've ever played (stay tuned for a future GOW). It must be the curse of Neo Geo, they have outstanding games and titles, but just couldn't break into the home market.

Neo Geo didn't stand a chance against the GameBoy Powerhouse...

So Why did I pick a "bad" game for this week's GOW? I still think there's value here as a game. Additionally, it's fun to play online via your keyboard if you wanted to try the flash version of this game (click here) for free.

Shrink the game, shrink the fun!
